Staff Therapist Q&A: Devon Spencer, AMFT

Pinnacle Counseling enjoys providing our different therapists with the opportunity to introduce themselves, highlighting their unique clinical and personal interests.

How would you describe your therapeutic approach/style?

I’ve been told I’m very “real.” I show up as myself, I’m direct, I use humor, and am as interactive a therapist as they come. My clients’ stated goals are always at the forefront of my practice, though I do not shy away from challenging or further exploring a thought, intention, or behavior. I believe it’s my job to introduce other perspectives, and encourage clients to think in different ways.

Are there any client systems or presenting problems you especially enjoy working with?

I find great fulfillment working with couples, no matter the problem. Most of us are not brought up on terms (or skill sets) like “emotion regulation” or “differentiation,” but I swear by those practices personally and professionally, and find that helping couples develop these tools often results in better communication and less conflict. Whether a couple or individual, I am also passionate about working with infidelity, sex and intimacy, non-traditional intimate relationships, and communication.

What advice do you have for clients who may be nervous or apprehensive to begin therapy?

Oh my gosh, therapy is the best- I’m in it myself! I realize it can feel frighteningly vulnerable to open yourself up to a total stranger, but there is nothing quite like having a space of your own, and a person whose sole purpose is to pay attention to you, and all that you’re experiencing. I take that role very seriously, and can promise that no matter the outcome, for those 50 minutes, my client is my entire world.

What do you believe are some of the key factors leading to positive change?

Openness. If a client is open to self-reflection and growth, and actively commits to those pursuits, change will follow. It will be challenging, it will take time, and it may get harder before it gets easier, but it will happen. If I didn’t believe that we are all capable of personal evolution, I could never do this job successfully.
