REPARENT(ED): Stories of sexual minorities unlearning constraining life lessons and reparenting more useful ones.

Tuesday, June 11th, 2024
9:30-11am (via Zoom)

This workshop focuses on applying the principles of unlearning the unhelpful lessons learned throughout one’s upbringing that no longer suit us and reparenting new/more evolved strategies within the context of therapy and counseling for sexual minorities.

Unlearning refers to the process of consciously letting go of old beliefs and patterns that constrain an individual’s growth and well-being. Reparenting involves the combination of healing unresolved wounds stemming from childhood experiences and developing new, healthier ways of relating to oneself and others.

Dr. Casey Gamboni, PhD, LMFT will present his most recent research findings around the unique lessons sexual minorities have found useful to unlearn and explore the thoughtful strategies of reparenting new ones. These lessons could involve challenging societal norms and/or combating internalized messages created as they age. They could also involve lifting constraints that restrict self-acceptance, providing safety and affirmation to the present self, and/or assessing present relationships that assist in overcoming trauma instead of accommodating it.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  • Understand the key principles of the unlearning and reparenting strategy by utilizing attachment theory, narrative interventions, and empirical research.

  • Share the presenter’s research findings on the unique lessons sexual minorities can unlearn that constrain self-growth and acceptance.

  • Aim to provide therapists and counselors with new insights, strategies, and tools to effectively support their sexual minority clients in their process of overcoming trauma in a culturally curious and affirming way.

Presenter: Dr. Casey Gamboni, PhD, LMFT
